Why do you go to the river?

Why do you go to the river, lake, or ocean? Maybe you just want to sit by your pool. Why do you go there?

To find a quiet, refreshing moment in a hectic day? Or to sit in the sun for a bit?

You may be one of those who like to fish. Some may travel miles to say they stood in the Pacific or Atlantic Ocean. Some may go to Israel to the Jordan River.

Whatever your reason, Acts 16:13 states that Paul and the people with him were looking for a place to pray. There was no synagogue there, so this was their meeting place—a quiet place.

Here is the Gathers singing “Down to the River to Pray.”

You can find several mentions of water in the Bible. Here are just a few.

  • Coming from the rock to provide drink for the Israelites. Exodus 17:6
  • Isaiah 12:3 states drawing out of the wells of salvation.
  • Isaiah 43:19 says God is making rivers in your desert.

The Holy Spirit is often referred to as water.  So why is your reason for going down to the river? The song says to go down to the river to pray. That could be a novel thought. Instead of looking for our benefits, how about telling God THANK YOU for His provision?
