Let’s be “Fishers of Men”

Many of us will remember the song “I will make you fishers of men.”

Jesus calls many people in the New Testament and today to come to Him and become disciples. It is found in Matthew 4:19.

In the New Testament, the disciples who said yes to becoming Jesus’ disciples didn’t know what to expect. For lack of better words, they were the ones Jesus was fishing for.

Anyone who has fished knows there are those who do it for fun and for food. Some may just take the bait, others get off the hook just before landing them, some fishermen do it as a catch-and-release, and then there are those who are caught.

Let’s look at each one where we are the fish, and Jesus is the fisherman:

  • Ones who eat the bait off the hook would be those who just come for a handout from the church.
  • Others get off the hook before landing them; they hear the message, yet the desires of their heart are on “What I want.”
  • Some fishermen do a catch-and-release; preachers preach a feel-good message and make promises they cannot keep, only to send you out wounded and disappointed.
  • Those who are caught accept the message of Jesus Christ and Him crucified. You make Him the Lord of your life.

See when Jesus said He would make you fishers of men. He didn’t say anything about YOU CLEANING THEM UP. That is His job; he is the only one who can truly see our hearts. So, allow Jesus to clean up your heart and mind.
